The best brand of running shoes doesn't necessarily have the most cushioning.

When looking for the best running shoe brand, beginning runners sometimes incorrectly believe that more cushioning is always better.  Yes, it's true that shoe companies like Adidas, New Balance, Nike, Asics, Brooks and Saucony design great running shoes with outstanding cushioning systems, but there are other factors to consider when ordering your jogging shoes.

The cushioning found in these shoes also absorbs some of the energy that runners are using.  That means that some sneakers actually take away from the rebounding energy of your muscles.

Update:  Don't buy running shoes until you read about our recent experience with a popular online store.

So when searching for the best running shoes, the runner should find harmony between the "mushiness" of athletic shoes and the proper shock absorption necessary for comfort and to prevent injuries.  How do you know if training shoes are too soft or too "mushy"?  If the runner can feel his feet sinking into the cushioning of the running shoes and losing momentum, then the sneakers are too "mushy".

Also, ask yourself if your footwear needs cushioning in the forefoot.  It's normal for athletic shoes to have their support system in the heel.  Most runners land heel first and need their running shoes to have the most shock absorption in the heel.  But maybe you land hardest on your forefoot.  And if you do...  you'll have problems with shin splints or stress fractures.  If so, the best running shoes for you will have cushioning in the forefoot - where you need it the most.
