Facts about orthotics for running shoes.

Running shoes orthotics offer many solutions to running problems.  But many runners have questions about using inserts for their shoes.  "Will these little plastic insole inserts weaken my feet?"  No, just the opposite.  Your running muscles should work more efficiently.

Tip: After your feet and running shoes have been fitted for orthotics, break them in gradually.  Your legs may feel achy at first, but that will pass.  Walk in them before you begin to run.  If you are uncomfortable during a run, stop and remove the orthotics from your athletic shoes.

Once the inserts are broken in, you should feel very comfortable in them.  In fact, you will probably use them in your running footwear indefinitely.  They should work so well, that you want to keep them in your athletic shoes to prevent future running injuries.

The exception is that most runners don't use the orthotics in their shoes when they race.  Just use them the majority of the time you're training.

So how do you know when it's time to replace your orthotics?  Pain will be your first signal.  If your running shoes are wearing badly again, that could be a sign to get replacements.

Running orthotics usually last between one and three years.  That's less often than replacing your shoes and if the inserts help your aching feet ... enough said.
