Return to Runner's Shoe Terminology Guide to running shoes terminology.Performance Training Shoe - Term for very light running shoes. Extremely flexible running shoes that are best used for fast paced running or racing. Compare to racing shoe. EVA - Ethylene Vinyl Acetate. Commonly used foam material for running shoes midsole. Heel Height - Runner's term for the height of the running shoes midsole and outsole. Choose the heel heights that are appropriate for the runner's size and needs. Heavier runners will likely need greater heel height with more foam in their running shoes. Faster runners make shoe contact more in the midfoot. They should look for a lower heel in their running footwear. Midsole - Terminology for cushioning foam found in running shoes. Two types of foam are used - EVA or polyurethane. Heavy runners might want polyurethane in their athletic shoes due to its denser, more durable quality. Compare that to running shoes with EVA which has a light, cushioned feel. Many of the best running shoes will use either material. Split Heel - Running shoes made with a two part heel structure. The outer and inner sides are separated in the athletic shoes to ensure a smooth motion from heel to toe. Trail Running Shoes - Terminology for athletic footwear made for off road running. Trail running shoes compared to trainer shoes have better traction and the best upper reinforcements.
