Return to Trail Runner's Shoes home page Do you know when your trail running shoes need to be replaced? Many runners aren't sure when it's time to get new shoes for their trail running program. Far too often runners will wait for pain in their ankles or knees to let them know. Doctors realize that running in worn-out trail shoes can lead to painful injuries in the ankle. Remember ... trail shoes have a different design compared to road running shoes. You see, trail running footwear emphasizes stability which protects you against ankle sprain, the number one injury in trail running. So just what are the warning signs of too much wear on your running shoes? Look for wrinkling in the cushioning of the shoe's midsole. Maybe they have lost their "cushy feeling". If so, then the midsole has likely been compressed. Not a good thing for your trail runners. Now examine the outsole treads. Is your trail footwear partially worn down on the outsoles? The only problem is shoes designed for trail runs don't show wear the same way your road sneakers do. So if you're not sure about the outward signs of wear ... what else can you do? Well, you can track the mileage in your off-road trainers. Or log the total hours you've actually worn the shoes. Grab a permanent marking pen and write your "first run date" directly inside the shoe. Runners should get between 350 and 500 miles of use for each pair. That might be an average of two or three pairs of shoes per year -- depending on your running miles. So let's say it's time to replace your old footwear and you're ready for a new pair designed specifically for trail training. How do you choose a shoe store on the net? Pick an online store that guarantees you can return your trail shoes for any reason. Yes! There are reliable athletic footwear stores that you can trust to do this. Choose an online shop that makes it easy to exchange your running shoes for up to 30-60 days if necessary.
